Sydney's 10 best Karaoke bars

Sing stars Shannon Langan, Brooke Salisbury and Christina Ku fight for the mic to party at Sydney's 10 best karaoke dens

Sydney's 10 best Karaoke bars

1 Ding Dong Dang

The 'Dang is without a doubt an institution on the Sydney karaoke scene. Friendly (if slightly quirky) hosts, a fully stocked bar (they frown on you bringing your own booze these days, alas), a great song selection and leather-lined rooms welcome you in for a discreet evening/early morning of crooning. Just don't dance on the tables - they're not as sturdy as they look.
Ding Dang Dong 7 Randle St, Surry Hills 2010. (02 9281 9000).

2 Echo Point

A spacious, friendly CBD establishment with ample flooring, giving way for impromptu carpet slides and mandatory air guitar. We recommend wearing pads after the fifth drink or so, as charming characters re-enact the original hits for your viewing pleasure. The vocals are all you.
Echo Point 262 Pitt St, Sydney 2000. (02 9283 1618)

3 Big Echo

With BYO booze, this is the perfect venue for the awkward work outing you've been dreading. Break down team barriers in the workplace and find some common ground behind the mic. This Sydney branch of a Japanese franchise also has a bar on site for scandalous water cooler chat come Monday.
Big Echo 104 Bathurst St, Sydney 2000. (02 9283 2666)

4 Karaoke World

A must-do for a group of amateur warblers.  They have multiple booths, a private stage demanding re-enactments of The Hustle, and a huge song list of guilty pleasures that only the big Japanese beers served at the bar can help you forget shaking it to. Nobody has to know.
Karaoke World 185 Elizabeth St, Sydney 2000 (02 9267 5011)

5 Kmix

The older karaoke kid on the block and a cheap date when the cash is low. The only ‘problem' is that's it's almost a little too clean and hygenic by karaoke's traditionally filthy standards. That said, you can still get down and dirty with some 80s classics here, alright.
Kmix 259 Pitt St, Sydney 2000. (02 9262 7763)

6 Greenbox Plus

A newer venue to belt out the less well-known Chinese tunes. You get points for attempting, so no matter how you sound, you can blame it on the cryptic lyrics and still come out a hero. There's a huge upstairs performance area to take in impressive skyline views too. Though not the cheapest possible option, how can you put a price on that level of stardom?
Greenbox Plus Karaoke Level 2/587 George St, Sydney 2000. (02 9283 8806)

7 Plush Karaoke

The young, energetic crowd needs little prompting to belt the ditties. Feed off the amped up aura, grab a brew, and jive. It prides itself in having a comprehensive list of obscure Asian beats. But if Indonesian, Thai or Putong is more mood killer than motivator, they've got you covered with English. You coward.
Plush Karaoke 259-261 Sussex St, Sydney 2000. (02 9283 8083)

8 Cash Box

In the heart of Chinatown, it maintains a charm of superior dodgyness. It's a chill locale sans the cheesy glitz, and theoretically, it'll only gain attractiveness the more you imbibe. Best of all, if the upstairs neighbours "like" your stuff, they'll drench you in water in thanks. But this is karaoke how it's meant to be: just a slurry singer, a tinny mic, and Blondie.
Cash Box Level 1, 61-63 Dixon St, Sydney 2000. (02 9281 3899)

9 Viva Lounge

BYO still reigns here. Pass on the bar and put your hard earned dough towards extending the singing session instead. It draws the crowds for the atmosphere alone, sleek and pristine. If you're schooled in Mandarin, that'll help. If not, it'll be hilarious. Either way, it's a fine choice to show your tribute to the Chinese pop gods.
Viva Lounge 210 Clarence St, Sydney 2000. (02 9283 7733)

10 Strike Bowling Bar

It's possibly not the immediate place you'd think of for karaoke, what with it being called "Strike Bowling Bar", but that just adds to the place's comprehensive radness. Knock down some pins (or gins) by way of warm up and then hit the private karaoke rooms for some alley cat good times. Get the staff to show you how to work their high tech equipment first though.
Strike Bowling Bar 2 The Promenade, King St Wharf, 2000(1300 787 453)
